Tommy Douglas was born in Falkirk, Scotland in 1904. He is the son of Annie and Thomas Douglas. His father was a low paid soldier who fought in the Boer War and World War I. His family immigrated to Canada and settled in Winnepeg. At the age of 15, Douglas started a career in boxing winning the light weight title in Manitoba. He held this title the following year. At age 26, he married a lovely woman named Irma Dempsey, they had one daughter. She became well-known actress Shirley Douglas. Later, they adopted another child who became a nurse. His grandson is the actor Kieffer Sutherland. Tommy Douglas was deemed to be a hero because he is the reason that Canada has free medical care. He was named "The Greatest Canadian" and "The Father of Medicare". Tommy Douglas graduated from Brandon College and soon after became a baptist minister. In college, Douglas studied and developed leadership skills in elocution classes, drama and debating. While he was a minister, he realised how many people suffered from poverty and hardship they faced which lead to the Great Depression. This lead him on to the medicare act. This inspired Tommy Douglas to help the less fortunate in the country and he soon began his late carreer in politics.


Tommy Douglas has been recognised for many accomplishments including the major one; free healthcare. Tommy Douglas is best known for his great fight for free health care. He brought affordable medical insurance, the construction of mental health clinics, free cancer treatment for those in needs, old age pension and much more to the Canadian government. He will always be recognised for the great acheivements he has done!
